Essentially a re-skinning of a Japanese game, it is rather easy to tell that this game has little to do with the Mario series as a whole. When is a Mario game not a Mario game? Why, when it is Super Mario Brothers 2, of course. In terms of the NES series, it is perhaps the second best. The technical limitations of the game are obvious to modern gamers, though the game is still quite a bit of fun. The game itself still stands up, though it is still the graphically weakest of the series. Not only do Bowser, Peach, and Toad first appear in this game, but basic enemies like Goombas, Koopa Troops, the Hammer Brothers, Bullet Bill and Piranha Plants made their debut. Multiple lives, power-ups and hidden pathways were common in the game, and most of the basic bits and pieces that would inform Mario’s history were present in the game. The game itself was simple, but set up many of the rules that would come to dominate platformers in the following years.
Super Mario Brothers was not the first appearance of Mario, but it is the first major outing in what would go on to become a major series. The question remains, though – which of these games was truly the best?
Consisting of three games, it changed the face of gaming and gave it its first true mascot. The Super Mario Brothers series is perhaps the best known series on the original Nintendo Entertainment System.
